CELEBRATE This Week IV

It’s real. Celebrating Writers is more than a computer file. It is a book. It’s been fun welcoming it into the world. One of the elementary schools in my district welcomed it with Kool and the Gang, flowers, and breakfast pastries. The All-Write Consortium smiled and applauded its arrival. A few friends have squealed and doted over the cover. Andy and the kids added a veggie pizza to the order tonight, just to celebrate a little around here. Next week Stenhouse is hosting a blog tour. It’s fun and sweet to celebrate the arrival of a new book.

But.

It’s not the reason I get up before 5 am every morning and pull out my computer after bedtime most nights. The prospect of holding a book in my hand isn’t what keeps me writing.  Today I celebrate all of the things that do keep me writing too early and too late every day.

  1. Tugging words until they play on the page and surprise me.
  2. Feedback.
  3. Making sense of my corner of the world.
  4. Flair pens.
  5.  Questions.
  6.  Coffee and sweet cream.
  7. A seven year old writing buddy who brings his own notebook to the couch on Saturday mornings.
  8. Getting out of cleaning bathrooms. (Andy does this job while I collect words.)
  9. iTunes Radio.
  10. Writing Groups. (Yes, there is more than one.)
How about you? What keeps you writing? I can't wait to read your celebrations this week too. Link-up below.

  1. Love the list of those important things, and pens would be on my list too, but sorry, not Flair, has to be mechanical pencil, specifically, twist erase, 0.5 lead! You have a wonderful and selfless husband who does bathrooms-always a gift, and a son who writes with you on Saturdays-a treasure for sure! Happy Saturday, Ruth!

  3. Oh how I LOVE this part of my week. This week I spent time looking for thing to include in my blog post for today. I can't wait to get your book! I, too, pre-ordered it!! It's been a TOUGH week for me at school and focusing on these celebrations helped me get through some low moments.

  7. Love your new book - it arrived this week. And I am an office supply addict. I love all sorts of pens and notebooks. My only required item is my notebook - Moleskin, soft cover, blank pages. After years of searching for the "perfect" notebook, this is the one I have discovered I love. :)

  8. I write for many of your reasons. One that I would add would be to connect with others. This has been an added benefit that I did not expect but love when it occurs.

  9. Flair pens in a wide variety of colors--pastels, bright, brown, you name it, I have Flair pen in that color. Mornings are my favorite time to write, because, really, I am brain-dead by the time I finish with my day. I'm loving this Saturday writing. It lets me reflect on my week and gets me thinking about next week. Now, I just need to figure out what to write the other days of the week.

  10. Congratulations on your new book! Obviously, I need to purchase it ASAP! Love your list of reasons to write. My reason to write is to get together with my writing partner, Megan, to first talk about our lives, have a great meal at our fav spot, Joseph-Beth Bookstores Bronte Bistro, and then hunker down to collaborate on our project.

  12. I want to say I write because if I don't I will forget it! I write because words are powerful. They bring sense to a sometimes insensible world. They are feelings, emotions, and need to be shared.

Your book is expected to arrive on Monday and I am so excited! Congratulations and thank you for sharing your words!

  13. I write because I want to know what words are around the corner but I haven't been introduced to yet. I need to keep walking (writing) to find them and give them the place in the world they are waiting for. I wait for surprises too and love it when they jump out at me and turn into something more. Something worth celebrating.
I am soooo excited for you and the launch of you book. What a celebration indeed and something sure to be a catalyst for getting others to write as well.

  14. Congratulations on your new book! Today I wrote because I was excited to celebrate the progress that my ESL students have made! It has been a long road with many twists, but today I see so much hope for my three boys that I wrote about today.

  17. I just wrote my slice today about a collaborative chapter that I was working on and the excitement of seeing it all come together into a draft ready to submit. I agree with you, the community/opportunity to discuss and get feedback is a big aspect that keeps me writing. I also love writing as a means to capture moments and to refer back to over time in order to remember things that I would not otherwise. With digital scrapbooking it is also a sense of showing family members that I love them enough to document parts of their lives.
